Chapter Nine
Ray wiped down the bar and picked up a couple of empty beer bottles. He surveyed the crowd that night.
He’d brought in Sam and Josh to pick up some slack while he and Clay manned behind the counter. Jeep and Bobby milled amongst the other patrons as they left the bar for their date. Before they walked out, Jeep stopped by the counter.
“Hey. We’re heading out. Are you going to be around after your shift is up?” Jeep flipped a lock of his hair off his forehead. “I wanted to talk to you. Think you’ll have time?”
“I’ll see what I can do.” It was a shitty answer, but the best he had. What would Jeep want to talk to him about? Moving out? Christ. They had the most dysfunctional living arrangement. He wanted his tenant, and the tenant wanted someone else—or he did, now that Ray had turned him down.
“Cool.” Jeep smiled. He lingered a moment longer then followed Bobby out of the bar.
A pang of jealousy hit him hard. He could’ve been the man walking out with Jeep. He could’ve if he hadn’t lost his cool. Why should Jeep even give him a second look? He’d been a jerk. He had wanted to say something suave and ended up making a fool of himself.
I’m damaged goods and not easy to get along with, but I’d like to get along with you. I like you, too. But he hadn’t had the strength to say those words. Why? He liked his loneliness? No. He held onto his fear as if were a prized possession. Yeah, God forbid he get rid of the fear and live a little.
Jesus. He’d become so freaking sappy. He needed to get his head out of his ass and back on the bar. Time to plow forward. The bar would survive without him, but he wouldn’t survive without it to ground him.
“Hey, Raygan. I’ve got a kid here who claims to know you. Says he needs a job.” Clay nodded to one of the counter patrons.
The moment he spotted the person in need of the job, he grinned. The kid wasn’t any kid. “Tedy! What’s up, my man?” He draped his damp towel over his shoulder and leaned on the bar. “You want to work in this dump?”
“I’m good, and yeah, I want to work here. I need cash.” Tedy toyed with one of his dreadlocks. His beard bobbed as he spoke, and the piercing in his brow glinted in the light.
“What for? The band didn’t take off?”
Tedy snorted. “Which one? I’ve been in three since high school. The first one fell apart because the lead singer liked his blow more than lyrics. The second one imploded because of creative differences. Translation, we were all drunk too often. The one I’m in now is good for me. It’s new and grass roots, but we all have the hunger without the drug problems.” He slapped a piece of paper on the bar. “I’ve got my paperwork stating I’ve had all the proper courses to be a professional bartender.
